La Ermita de las Nieves y la Cueva Catedral

La Ermita de las Nieves y la Cueva Catedral

It made perfect sense for the Virgen de las Nieves to be the Patroness of Lanzarote, with her hermitage perched near the edge of the Risco de Famara, serving as a place of pilgrimage where prayers were offered to ward off calamities and to hope for at least a little more rain in the coming year.

Thus, she was the Patroness of Lanzarote from 1725 until other hardships, in the form of volcanic eruptions, shifted the title to Mancha Blanca and the Virgen de los Dolores. Since the 16th century, the Ermita de las Nieves has witnessed it all: pirate raids (around 1576), periods of abandonment, becoming a center of pilgrimage and festive processions, and the ceremonial descent of the Virgin to the Vega de San José in Teguise every five years.
